HISTORY

The University
The University of Missouri-St. Louis (UM-St. Louis) is one of four campuses that constitute the University of Missouri, ninth largest university in the United States. Founded in 1839, the University of Missouri became a land-grant institution in 1862. The St. Louis campus was established in 1963, becoming the largest university serving St. Louis and third largest in the state.

The College
Nursing was initiated at UM-St. Louis in 1981. The original program was designed to provide an innovative upper division program leading to the baccalaureate degree, specifically designed for registered nurses that had graduated from hospital diploma or community college associate degree nursing programs.

In 1987, the first students were admitted to the Cooperative Master's in Nursing Program. This program was a cooperative endeavor between the St. Louis and Kansas City Schools of Nursing within the University of Missouri System. The program offers advanced study in Nursing Care of the Adult, Nursing of Children, and Women’s Health. The program also prepares nurses to function as administrators, educators, or clinical specialists and practitioners in family, pediatrics, neonatal, and women’s health.

A Cooperative PhD in Nursing was added in 1994 with inter-campus activities offered between the St. Louis, Columbia and Kansas City Schools of Nursing. The emphasis areas include Health Promotion and Protection, Health Restoration and Support, and Health Care Systems.

The School of Nursing was formally designated a College in 1994 with the addition of a well-established basic undergraduate nursing program to the University. The basic undergraduate program leads to the baccalaureate degree in nursing. In 2000, an accelerated track was added to the basic baccalaureate nursing program.

MISSION

The mission of the College of Nursing at the University of Missouri – St. Louis is to shape the future of nursing practice through education, research and service. Through innovative baccalaureate, masters, doctoral and professional programs, we develop nurses who are dedicated to excellence and leadership. We leverage strategic partnerships to generate, translate, disseminate and apply knowledge that will improve health, with an emphasis on our metropolitan region.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the nursing faculty at the College of Nursing is congruent with the missions of the College of Nursing and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Faculty are dedicated to providing nursing education that prepares graduates as professionals to practice in generalist nursing roles, advanced nursing roles, and as nurse scientists in health care systems. All academic programs are based on the faculty’s beliefs about nursing, human beings, health, teaching/learning, and nursing education.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING-TRADITIONAL

In 1981, the University of Missouri - St. Louis established the baccalaureate completion program for registered nurses. In 1994, the program expanded to include a pre-licensure baccalaureate program, making the University the only public institution in the St. Louis metropolitan area that offers baccalaureate through doctoral nursing education. The College enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship with the region’s largest and most sophisticated providers of health care services.

The undergraduate nursing programs are constituents of the National Student Nurses’ Association. This organization provides nursing students in the basic baccalaureate program the opportunity to connect with the nursing profession prior to licensure. The Nu Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was installed at the College in 1994.

Nursing programs at the College are fully accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the nationally recognized accrediting body for baccalaureate and higher degree programs, and approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

It is recommended that all prospective students view a copy of the Missouri Nursing Practices Act and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Functional Ability Requirements which delineate requirements that an individual must meet to perform nursing activities in a safe and effective manner.

INTRODUCTION TO THE NURSING DISCIPLINE This course introduces the historical and theoretical development of nursing as a discipline. Nursing is examined as an emerging practice profession. Variables that influence nursing and health care are discussed. Concepts and skills introduced in this course guide the student's educational experience within the nursing major. NURSING AND HEALTH As an introductory nursing course to the discipline of nursing, the historical and theoretical development of nursing is explored with an emphasis on critical thinking, the teaching/ learning process, and foundational practice concepts. Through modular laboratory experiences, the student acquires psychomotor skills to provide safe and effective nursing care to clients promoting health and wellness. This course includes classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences. NUTRITION AND HEALTH This course examines nutritional needs throughout the life span with emphasis on nutritional principles related to health promotion and protection. Content includes assimilation, digestion and absorption of nutrients and cultural and economic influences on dietary practices. FOUNDATIONS IN NURSING AND HEALTH This course emphasizes critical thinking, the teaching-learning process, and foundational practice concepts. Through modular laboratory opportunities, the student acquires the basic psychomotor skills necessary to provide safe and effective nursing care to clients experiencing common physiological alterations in health. This course includes classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences. COMMUNICATION IN THE NURSING PROFESSION This course focuses on the development of communication abilities utilized in professional nursing. The individual's relationship with self, others and groups is discussed. Students learn verbal and non-veral communication skills, selfawareness, and sensitivity to others. Interpersonal skills are introduced to enable the student to develop effective human caring relationships with a diverse population of clients and colleagues. ASSESSMENT OF CLIENTS IN HEALTH AND ILLNESS This course integrates theoretical knowledge and interpersonal skills in the assessment of clients, focusing on differentiating normal from abnormal findings. It emphasizes the use of problem solving, critical thinking and cultural competency in identifying multidimensional health variations across the life span. The course includes classroom and laboratory experiences. PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL BASES OF NURSING PRACTICE This course focuses on the nature of disease, its causes and the bodily changes that accompany it. The course includes a study of general principles of disease, specific diseases of individual organs and systems and the clinical implications. PHARMACOTHERAPEUTICS IN NURSING PRACTICE This course introduces key terminology, legal foundations, general principles and clinical applications of pharmacology. DIMENSIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING This course investigates the roles and responsibilites of the professional nurse within a rapidly changing health care delivery system. Key issues are explored with emphasis on health promotion and health. Graduates of diploma nursing programs will be awarded college credit for successful validation of basic nursing knowledge as part of this course. DIMENSIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE This transition practicum course for the registered nurse who successfully completed an associate desgree or diploma nursing program investigates the roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse within a rapidly changing health care system. Key issues are explored with emphasis on health promotion and primary prevention. ADULT HEALTH NURSING I This course focuses on the nursing care of the adult experiencing selected pathophysiological processes affecting body regulatory mechanisms. These mechanisms are related to immune responses, problems of oxygenation: ventilation, transport and perfusion: kidney function; regulatory mechanisms and digestion absorption and elimination. emphasis is placed on health restoration, maintenance and support as well as the continued development of the nurse-client relationship, critical thinking processes, and research-based nursing practice. This course includes classroom and clinical activities in a variety of settings. ADULT HEALTH NURSING II This course focuses on the nursing care of the adult experiencing selected pathophysiological processes affecting body regulatory mechanisms. These mechanisms are related to endocrine, sensory-perceptual, gynecological, and genitourinary functions. Emphasis is placed on health restoration, maintenance and support as well as the continued development of the nurse-client relationship, critical thinking processes, and research-based nursing practice. This course includes classroom and clinical activities in a variety of settings. INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IN NURSING This course provides an overview of applications of computers in nursing and health care. The course introduces historical, social, legal, ethical, and organizational issues and problems involved in computerized health care environments. The use of computers to organize, access, retrieve and manipulate data, generate reports and communicate electronically is emphasized. PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING This course focuses on health and illness across the lifespan of clients who have acute and chronic emotional and psychosocial difficulties and psychiatric illnesses. The course emphasizes development of students' decisional capabilities, self-awareness and professional behaviors as they utilize theory and research from nursing, psychology and related disciplines for the provision of nursing care to individuals, families, and groups. Clinical experiences in community and acute care settings are designed for students to engage in individual and group strategies that promote and maintain mental health. Course includes classroom and clinical activities in a variety of settings. PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING This course focuses on health and illness across the lifespan of clients who have acute and chronic emotional and psychosocial difficulties and psychiatric illnesses. CHILD AND FAMILY HEALTH NURSING This course focuses on pediatric health and illness with emphasis on family dynamics, growth and development and communication with children and their families. Health promotion, protection, restoration, maintenance and support concepts are covered in experiences that include hospital and community settings. Health care policy and systems are studied as relevant to this population. Course includes classroom and clincal activities in a variety of settings. COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING 300 This course provides a conceptual foundation for nursing that recognizes the community as client in society. The course examines socioeconomic, environmental, epidemiological, and legislative influences, ethical/legal issues, and the impact of health beliefs and practices on health promotion and protection in communities and society. The student applies various theories and concepts when encountering families, groups and communities with diverse value systems and cultural backgrounds. Course includes classroom and clinical activities in a variety of settings. SENIOR SYNTHESIS This course integrates theory and practice from previous nursing and general education courses with the goal of preparing the student for entry into professional nursing practice. Within a seminar context, students explore a variety of clinical and professional nursing topics. The course includes research-based strategies utilized for health promotion and protection, health restoration, maintenance and support. Areas of study are selected from across the lifespan, including diverse populations in a variety of health care systems. Course includes classroom and clinical experiences in a variety of settings. Not for graduate credit.
