MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The School accomplishes its mission as steward of the public interest by:
1. providing high quality education within an environment of scholarly inquiry in order to prepare competent and compassionate practitioners and scholars of, and leaders in, nursing who will actively contribute to the goal of a healthy state and nation,
2. generating, integrating, disseminating, and using knowledge for practice and policy,
3. creating vibrant and supportive life-long learning environments to ensure a cadre of nurses who value and participate in scholarship and life-long learning, and who are able quickly to respond to and effectively address the changing health needs and problems of the state and nation,

INTRODUCTION TO THE DISCIPLINE OF NURSING
The course will introduce the student to concepts basic to the discipline and practice of nursing, including nursing, practice, critical thinking, care and the context of nursing.
INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Using a lifespan approach, the course focuses on individual psychosocial and cognitive development, developmental milestones, physical growth, and risk prevalence from infancy through elder years and on family development. Social sciences perspective.
BASIC THEORIES, PROCESSES, AND SKILLS FOR CLINICAL NURSING
The focus of the course is on development and application of basic nursing concepts and skills in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
The course is concerned with the disruption of normal physiology; the alterations and mechanisms involved in the disruption; the manifestations in disease and at risk conditions; and the pathophysiological principles underlying therapeutic interventions.
PHARMACOLOGY
Using the science of pharmacology and pharmacologic principles underlying therapeutic interventions, the course focuses on the introduction to nursing responsibilities regarding pharmacologic therapy.
NURSING CARE OF PATIENTS WITH MAJOR ADULT HEALTH PROBLEMS I
First-level course in applying critical thinking skills to nursing care problems of adults with major health problems.
NURSING ROLE IN NORMAL AND THERAPEUTIC NUTRITION
Emphasis is on analysis of the nutritional needs of clients at any point in the health-illness continuum, throughout the lifespan and across diverse cultural groups.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Concepts and methods of comprehensive health assessment of children, adults, and elders. Emphasis will be on data collection as a base for initiation of caring and decision making in nursing practice.
NURSING CARE OF INFANTS AND CHILDREN
The nursing care of children and their families is explored. Knowledge from a variety of disciplines is applied through the nursing process to the direct care of infants and children.
MATERNAL/NEWBORN NURSING
The course focuses on application of critical thinking skills to provide competent maternal and newborn care and demonstration of caring through the family-centered approach to maternal/newborn care.
COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
The course provides a theoretical and empirical foundation for the practice of community/public health nursing, using critical thinking to focus on health promotion and disease prevention.
NURSING CARE OF CLIENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
The course relies upon critical thinking for applying psychiatric and nursing theories to the nursing process in the care of mentally ill clients and families in various health care settings
CARE MANAGEMENT
The course explores theoretical and contextual elements of nursing care management. Models of care management are analyzed, emphasizing the role of the nurse in care coordination, discharge planning, and referral.
INTRODUCTION TO NURSING RESEARCH
This introductory course helps students conceptualize both the basic research process and the importance of research to nursing, and enables students to understand and use published healthcare research.
LEADERSHIP IN ORGANIZATIONS
The course uses a systems approach to examine leadership behaviors and organizational structures that enhance patient care delivery. Organizational roles and their implications for professional nursing practice are emphasized.
THE NURSING PROFESSION IN TODAY'S HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS
Current social, economic, legal, ethical, and policy issues affecting the practice, education, and profession of nursing are explored.
NURSING CARE OF PATIENTS WITH MAJOR ADULT HEALTH PROBLEMS II
Second-level course in applying critical thinking skills to complex health problems of adults. Emphasis will be placed on continuity of care and intervention necessary for promoting optimal patient outcomes.
