The goal of the College of Nursing at the University of Rhode Island is to prepare you to meet the exciting challenges of professional nursing.You will find that our undergraduate nursing curriculum is dynamic, reflecting the needs of our changing health care system. Our curriculum balances theory with clinical practice.

As a URI nursing student you will learn in a variety of settings in the community and also in the hospital setting. You will gain experience in caring for the health needs of clients of all ages and you will be guided by faculty who are experts in nursing.

The college is equipped with state-of-the art equipment to give students experience from practicing basic assessment skills to managing patients with complex critical care needs utilizing simulation experiences.

Perhaps you are already a registered nurse eager to further your professional career.The graduate programs of the College of Nursing provide a variety of options for you.

The Master's of Science provides preparation for an advanced practice role in the clinical setting of your choice or in roles of education or nursing administration. All students are actively involved in some form of clinical focus, where the emphasis is either on the client or the organization, depending on the specialty.Students may also opt to combine specialties such as the family nurse practitioner with the nurse midwifery program.

If you already are master's prepared you may consider one of our certificate programs. We also offer a post-masters certificate in all of the programs as well as in the specialty of Thanatology.

If you are considering education at the doctoral level, the College of Nursing offers a Doctor of Philosophy. The outcome of the doctoral program is to produce nurse scientists who have the research skills to study nursing problems in the domain of the client, the client-nurse and the environment.

The College of Nursing at URI is involved in many campus activities, as well as nursing activities on a state, national and international level. Our students are from diverse cultures and a good proportion of the undergraduate population is male.

The faculty are responsive to changing health care needs and changing roles of nurses within society. The faculty respond to these changes through collaboration with professional organizations, governmental agencies and other educational institutions and with a variety of health care agencies. The college strives for excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service.

MISSION

The College of Nursing is committed to excellence in nursing education, clinical practice, nursing research, and community service. The College prepares nursing students to be effective clinicians and leaders who will work to improve the health and health care of the people of Rhode Island and beyond, and contribute to the nursing profession through professional, scholarly, legal, and political activities.

The Baccalaureate Program prepares individuals to assume the role of professional nurses who can practice in a variety of health care settings. The master's program prepares nurses to assume leadership roles as advanced practice nurses, educators, and administrators. The doctoral program prepares nursing scholars and researchers who can contribute to the advancement of nursing knowledge and improvement of clinical practice.

The faculty is committed to promoting students' ethical development, critical thinking, responsible practice, an attitude of scholarship, and motivation for life-long learning. Students are sought from diverse cultural economic and ethnic backgrounds. Close student-faculty interaction is fostered and students are viewed as partners in the educative process. Interdisciplinary partnerships and research involving faculty, students, and clinicians from within and outside the University are strongly encouraged.

The faculty is proactive in both shaping and responding to changing health care needs and changing nursing roles within society through collaboration with health care and government agencies, professional organizations, and other educational institutions. The College of Nursing is a flourishing center of nursing education, research, scholarship, and service for practice. Our graduates will be clinicians, leaders, researchers, and scholars who are highly competent, grounded in a sense of inquiry, and committed to human caring. Students and faculty will collaborate in the discovery. integration, application, and dissemination of knowledge in nursing. Clinical excellence will be enhanced through collaboration and partnerships within the University and the community. The College of Nursing will be a resource for knowledge that improves the quality of nursing practice and health care in Rhode Island, the nation, and the world. Philosophical and theoretical insights and research findings will be disseminated to enhance nursing practice nationally and internationally. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE

The baccalaureate program in nursing is designed to prepare men and women to become professional registered nurses. Upon graduation the student is eligible to take the State Licensing Board Examination (NCLEX-RN) and obtain an entry level position in medical, surgical, geriatric, maternity, pediatric, psychiatric-mental health or community nursing in a variety of settings: hospitals, home health care, clinics, community health agencies, hospices or the armed services. The program is approved by the RI State Board of Nurse Registration and Nurse Education and is accredited by the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE).

Nursing is a creative profession that provides for the promotion of health, prevention of illness and care of patients. The curriculum integrates the humanities and the physical and social sciences with nursing courses. Students begin nursing courses during their freshman year with our first nursing course, Professional Practice in Health and Illness.

The clinical courses include experiences in numerous hospitals, community health agencies, nursing homes, schools and clinics throughout Rhode Island. From your very first clinical experience to your final semester, you will gain the competence and confidence needed to practice nursing within a constantly changing health care arena.

Introduction to the concept of professional helping including problem management, communication, the teaching process, and critical decision making. Analysis of ecosystem influences and cultural variability in health, illness, and health care.

HUMAN SEXUALITY
Interdisciplinary approach to the study of individual and societal determinants in the development, integration, and expression of human sexuality and a code of sexual behavior.

COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Introduces the techniques of history taking and systematic health assessment of individuals across the life span. Recognition of normal findings is emphasized.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Examination of basic concepts of pathophysiology and the related levels of prevention, etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations underlying alterations according to biological processes across the life span.

FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE WITH OLDER ADULTS
Foundational concepts of professional nursing practice emphasizing levels of prevention and nursing care focusing on the older adult in wellness and illness.

PRACTICUM IN FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING WITH OLDER ADULTS
Practicum emphasizing foundational concepts of basic nursing and levels of prevention focusing on the older adult client in wellness and illness.

CONCEPTUAL BASES OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING
Overview and synthesis of concepts essential to development of the professional nursing role. Primary emphasis on expanding and refining the theoretical bases for decision making and nursing strategies in client care.

NURSING RESEARCH
Introduction to principles of scientific inquiry and analytical thinking common to problem solving in nursing. Research process and implications to know ledge development, utilization, and evidence-based practice are explored.

MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING
Concepts of medical-surgical nursing with emphasis on nursing strategies and utilizing levels of prevention in management of adults with acute and chronic illness, including the impact of illness on their families.

MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING PRACTICUM
Application of medical-surgical nursing strategies in the management of adults with acute and chronic illness, and the impact on their families.

PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Nursing strategies to support and care for persons with limitations in psychosocial functioning in the context of family and community; psychiatric and/or mental health.

AGING AND HEALTH
Examines normal age changes, effects on health, health problems, and interventions to achieve optimal wellness. Utilizes a systems perspective emphasizing healthy, positive aging and incorporates an interdisciplinary approach to care.

IMPACT OF DEATH ON BEHAVIOR
Seminar to explore the human experience of dying and the issue of quality of life. Group discussion focuses on the effect that individual and social values and medical and social structures have on one’s grief response and bereavement process.

DIRECTED STUDY
Research study or individual scholarly project relating to the nursing major. Faculty guidance in problem delineation and in development, implementation, and evaluation of the project.

NURSING OF CHILDREN
Examines theories and strategies that promote or restore health and prevent or manage illness in infants, children, and adolescents; includes family-centered concepts and supportive management during end-of-life care.

PRACTICUM IN NURSING OF CHILDREN
Synthesis of pediatric knowledge and the application of the nursing process in the care of children and their families.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
Analysis of concepts related to public health and nursing care of clients in the home and the community with emphasis on vulnerable and high-risk populations.

PRACTICUM IN COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
Application of the nursing process in the home and community with emphasis on vulnerable and high-risk populations. In-depth analysis of a selected population, including utilization of epidemiological and public health principles.

DIRECTED STUDY FOR REGISTERED NURSE STUDENTS

PERSPECTIVES ON MALE AND FEMALE SEXUALITY
