The College of Nursing enrolls approximately 275 undergraduate students in the upper division nursing major (of which 40 are RNs), 135 master's students, and 22 doctoral students. Students obtain their clinical experiences at local hospitals, community agencies, and rural and urban clinics. U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate program among the top 19% in the nation.

MISSION
The college is committed to the delivery of high quality and academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge through research and other scholarly activities, to the provision of service to the community, and to the promotion of the profession of nursing. Specifically, our unique mission is to facilitate the development of professional nurses who will promote society's health at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
VISION
We envision the University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Nursing to be a diversified academic community of faculty and students where undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students work collaboratively to become expert nursing professionals for various levels of nursing practice. The college will be recognized for its excellent educational programs, unique research emphases, innovative practice arrangements, and services to the community. We aspire to be the college of choice for professional nursing in Tennessee and nationally recognized for nursing excellence.
B.S.N. PROGRAM
The baccalaureate nursing curriculum is guided by the assumptions that: persons and their health and well being are the focus of nursing; nursing is a caring practice profession, an art, and a scientific discipline; persons are influenced by a complex environment (both internal and external) that affects their health and well being, and; a goal for nursing is to modify environmental factors to promote, maintain and restore health. The curriculum also integrates the themes of holism, diversity and caring and emphasizes critical thinking, communication and leadership and management principles and skills.
A broad base of general education, a thorough study of human behavior, an emphasis on health maintenance, promotion and restoration, and a strong family and community orientation are all essential components of baccalaureate nursing education. Maintaining a high quality, relevant program responsive to the increasing complexity of health care delivery, the changing health needs of society, and the changing and expanding role of the nurse, enables graduates of the program to
* assume beginning leadership positions in a variety of settings,
* work collaboratively with other health professionals,
* function as socially conscious and contributing citizens, and
* pursue advanced education on either a formal or informal basis.

INTRO TO NURSING
History, philosophy, and scope of nursing practice with emphasis on the holism of persons, standards for professional practice, and an overview of the nursing process and nursing theories.
TRANSITION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING
Builds on the knowledge base and experience of RNs in transition to professional nursing. Focuses on the conceptual foundations of nursing practice and issues in health care delivery.
FOUNDATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
Emphasis on patient centered communication, therapeutic interventions, and critical thinking as key elements in the use of the nursing process. Clinical laboratory experiences provide opportunity for the application of these processes in the care of adults in selected health care settings.
WELLNESS AND LIFESTYLE
Models of wellness and holistic health within the framework of modern medicine, eastern philosophy, and recent discoveries about the interaction between the mind and the body. Biopsychosocial interactions of lifestyle and genetic risk factors for cardiovascular and malignant diseases, wellness potential, and potential longevity. Process of lifestyle changes will be facilitated by faculty. Open to undergraduate students in all colleges.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF HEALTH DEVIATIONS
Application of physiological concepts to health promotion, maintenance, deviations, and restoration. Introduction to psychoneuroimmunology. Emphasis on disease processes on the human body.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Theory and laboratory practice in the systematic assessment of health status including history taking and performance of physical assesment skills.. for RNs this course is prerequisite to any clinical course beyond 305 Transitions.
TRANSCULTURAL NURSING
Focus on cultural perspectives inhealth and illness. Discussion of diversity in and influence of culture on helath promotion, maintenance, and restoration across the lifespan and in selcted nursing specialties, ethnic populations, and religious denominations
PHARMACOLOGY I
Biochemical and pharmacological effects of therapeutic drugs on the human body. Basic concepts of drug action and interactions. Major drug classifications.
HEALTH MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION ACROSS THE LIFE SPAN
Focus on health maintenance and restoration in nursing practice with children or adults experiencing commonly occurring acute or chronic illness.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES IN NURSING
Focus on concepts and strategies for leadership as a professional nurse. Emphasis on values clarification and development of personal attributes necessary for professional practice: emotional intelligence and caring; critical thinking and decision making; management of time, stress, and anger; communication and change theories.
HEALTH PROMOTION AND MAINTENANCE IN COMMUNITY
Focus on nursing care of at risk populations. Design and implement interventions tp promote and maintain health. Includes assessment of sociocultural values, environmental factors, health education, and community resources.
GERONTOLOGY PRACTICUM
Off campus supervised experience in gerontology. Offered as part of the gerontolgy minor. Open to all students in all colleges.
HEALTH PROMOTION AND MAINTENANCE IN CHILD BEARING FAMILIES
Nursing practice for promotion, maintenance, and restoration of reproductive health. Emphasis on therapeutic relationships with child bearing families for long term positive impact on health care and lifestyle.
PHARMACOLOGY II
Continuation of Pharmacology I with emphasis on nursing responsibilities in the safe and effective use of therapeutic drugs, recognition and reporting of side effects, and critical aspects of patient education.
FAMILY/COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
Application of the nursing process to individuals, families, and groups in the childbearing/rearing stages of development. Clinical experiences are provided in a variety of hospital and community settings.
MENTAL HEALTH MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION
Nursing to support and care for persons with mental health needs. Emphasis on use of self as therapeutic agent with individuals, groups and families and developing nursing strategies for mental health maintenance and restoration. Prereq: all required 300 level nursing courses or RN status.
HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, RESTORATION IN THE COMMUNITY
Focus on nursing at risk of individuals, communities, and populations. Assessment of sociocultural values, environmental factors, health education, and community resources. Design of interventions to promote, maintain, and restore health through the use of the epidemiological process.
DIRECTED CLINICAL PRACTICE IN COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
Clinical practice in a community health setting. For RN Master's Entry students only.
INTERPERSONAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS FOR NURSING
Focus on concepts and strategies as a professional nurse. Appplication of the concepts of groups dynamics and teamwork issues having an impact on nursing practice.
PROFESSIONAL AND WORKPLACE ISSUES IN NURSING
Survey of issues and trends that influence the practice of professional nursing. Legal and regulatory processes affecting nursing practice and clarification of personal and professional values.
PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP ISSUES
For Registered Nurses (RN) and Masters Entry Students (MES). Survey of issues and trends that influence the practice of professional nursing. Focus on concepts and strategies for leadership as a profesional nurse. Emphasis on personal development and interpersonal skills.
HEALTH RESTORATION ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Focus on health restoration in nursing practice to support and care for children or adults and their families with acute, complex health needs. Emphasis on quality of care, continuity of care, coordination of care, and end of life care. Prereq: all required 300 nursing level courses.
SPECIAL TOPICS
In-depth study of selected nursing topics, problems, or issues not covered in other courses. Topics determined by faculty and student interest.
NURSING RESEARCH
Introduction to research, design, and methodologies. Critique of selected research studies for application to evidence- based nursing practice.
HEALTH MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION IN COMMUNITY
Analysis of health needs of a selected community utilizing the epidemiological process. Emphasis on visiting clients and families across the lifespan in their own environment.
SPECIALTY PRECEPTORSHIP
In depth practicum to develop knowledge and skill in selected specialty area under direct guidance of faculty.
INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
Participation in selected health and nursing care in foreign countries. Requires consent of instructor.
INDEPENDENT STUDY
