As part of a tri-campus University of Washington system, the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) enjoys access to the outstanding resources of our prestigious university system while being small enough to provide a sense of community. Each of the three UW campuses has nursing programs and shares a tri-campus accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

The Seattle campus provides basic BSN education along with their Masters and Doctoral programs of study. UW Bothell and UW Tacoma do not offer basic BSN education but rather provide access to further educational opportunities for registered nurses working in Washington State.

The history of the University Of Washington School Of Nursing in Seattle dates to 1916 when a nursing course was first offered through the Pre-Medical Department in what was then the College of Science. This course became the basis for the BSN degree in 1918. In 1929, the newly built King County Harborview Hospital and the University established a nursing program. This integrated four year nursing program was later expanded to incorporate two hospital diploma programs at Swedish Hospital (1946) and Virginia Mason Hospital (1950).

In 1945, the School of Nursing became an autonomous unit of the University of Washington together with the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy. The four schools became the Division of Health Sciences within the University structure in 1946. Programs leading to the Master of Arts and Master of Nursing degrees were established in 1937.

In 1992 the first Bachelor of Science in Nursing completion program classes were offered at the University of Washington Bothell and now have graduated over 1000 BSN students. The University of Washington Bothell Master of Nursing program admitted the very first cohort in 2002; and now has over 50 alumni.

CRITICAL THINKING IN NURSING
Focuses on types of thinking and writing germane to learning and practice in nursing, including self assessment, understanding and producing written communications, abstract thinking, group dialogue, evaluating points of view, problem solving, clinical decision making. Provides opportunity for application in discipline-related issues and frameworks.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE & NURSING INQUIRY
Introduction to concepts and processes of research used in investigating nursing problems. Problem formulation, research designs, human subject protection, and dissemination of findings are addressed.

CULTURAL & SOCIAL ISSUES IN HEALTH CARE
Examines the influence of culture, ethnicity, race, class, gender and sexual orientation on health and illness. Critically analyzes how oppression and privilege relate to health and healing. Student apply self awareness, knowledge, skills in planning for and providing non-disciminatory and cuturally competent health care in a multicultural society.

PRACTICUM WITH POPULATIONS IN COMMUNITY HEALTH SETTINGS
Analysis, application, and evaluation of the nursing process at the level of the community. Formulation of community health diagnoses as the basis for community-level interventions to maintain and promote biospsychosocial health, prevent disease, and enable self care by the community. Analysis of nursing's role in community health.

LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
Introduction to the major ethical theories and principles through the use of models for the analysis of representative cases. The recurring ethical problems in clinical practice, such as withholding and withdrawing life support, promoting client autonomy, and interprofessional conflicts, are analyzed and debated.

RELATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN NURSING
Theory, current research, and practice in communication to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships with clients and health care colleagues. Lecture/discussion and laboratory learning opportunities include concepts of relationship development and disorder, interpersonal and group therapeutic communication processes, health care interviewing, and social support.

SENIOR PORTFOLIO
Student will collaborate with faculty mentor to create a portfolio demonstrating the progress made toward individual and program goals. When completed, portfolio will contain examples of papers, videotapes, evaluations from faculty, peers and self, and a reflective summary on the learning that has occurred.

SPECIAL TOPICS IN NURSING
Course content and credits vary depending upon topic.

SPECIAL PROJECT
Scholarly inquiry with in-depth, focused analysis, culminating in a written product/report for dissemination.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
This course is designed to provide an undergraduate student of the Nursing Program an opportunity to investigate a selected problem and to do an analysis and interpretation of the findings resulting from the investigation under supervision of a faculty member. The credit distribution is determined by the student and faculty member and is dependent upon the number of quarters used to complete the project.

INDEPENDENT STUDIES OR RESEARCH
Supervised individual research on a specific nursing problem

CURRENT HEALTH TOPICS
Survey of current issues in human health with analysis of selected topics. The personal, social, political and economic aspects of health are explored through professional health writing and interdisciplinary literature. Course content will be developed by the faculty offering the topic. Number of credits will be determined based on the nature of the topic and course assignments.

SELECTED TOPICS IN HEALTH
Guided survey and discussion of the current literature in health related to personal, social, economic and political topics. May have field component. Course content will be developed by the faculty offering the topic. Number of credits will be determined based on the nature of the topic and course assignments.
