Ursuline College (Breen School of Nursing)




Welcome to Ursuline College and the Breen School of Nursing. Nursing has been a vital program at Ursuline College since 1975 when Saint John College of Cleveland was blended into the Ursuline College community. I speak with genuine pride about an Ursuline/Saint John College nursing education, not only as Dean of the nursing school, but also as an alumna. I graduated from Saint John College in 1974 and my nursing education has served me very well!

A holistic, values-based education in the Catholic tradition is provided through the nursing school, and graduates are prepared to practice in a manner that is competent, caring, and reflective of high standards. While clinical knowledge and skills are mastered by nursing students, the human spiritual element is also emphasized directly through connections with patients and their families.

Ursuline College offers the Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree preparing you for highly skilled and technical work at the patient's bedside, in the intensive care unit, emergency department, or operating room. Or, you can apply your nursing skills in the community through the visiting nurse service, home health care, school nursing, or occupational health. Many other nursing opportunities are available as more and more innovative health care ventures develop. At Ursuline, we offer the traditional or generic BSN program, as well as LPN-to-BSN and RN-to-BSN programs. We also partner with Fairview Hospital to offer the accelerated, 15-month BSN program for students with bachelor's degrees in other majors who wish to pursue a nursing career.

Nursing students Our Master of Science in nursing (MSN) program allows students to pursue advanced practice nursing as an adult clinical nurse specialist, adult nurse practitioner, or family nurse practitioner. We offer specialization in palliative care, care management, and nursing education as well.

The Breen School of Nursing is fully approved and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Ohio Board of Nursing. Ursuline College is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

PHILOSOPHY

The Breen School of Nursing exists to provide a unique educational experience. It supports and implements the philosophy and aims of Ursuline College, a Catholic liberal arts institution of higher learning. Through the integration of the Ursuline Studies Program and the nursing curriculum, nursing students will experience a value-based, holistic, collaborative, evolving education within a caring framework. The focus of the nursing program is reflected in its Christian context and principles of love, care, and concern. Nurses are taught to recognize the dignity, worth, and rights of all persons in the continuum of living and dying. Every individual is worthy of respect and of the best care available.

The person is a unified whole with physical, sociocultural, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual components. As a unique individual, each human being draws on personal resources, interaction with others and cultural values in a quest for health. The faculty recognizes the individual's dignity as exemplified by the Christian view of person as one endowed with reason and the freedom to develop a personal relationship with God. The individual has rights to freedom of choice, personal dignity, and equality of opportunity for achieving one's potential.

Nursing is a unique profession with core elements of caring, compassion, and competence. The discipline of nursing evolves from a theoretical foundation of knowledge, skills, and attitudes drawn from the liberal arts and behavioral sciences. The nursing profession is continuously emerging as a result of nursing research and evidence based practice. Nursing, a scientific goal-oriented process, requires critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. Professional nurses are prepared to function independently, interdependently, and collaboratively in a variety of settings.

Health care policy plays a significant role in global health. Nurses apply their knowledge and leadership skills in taking an active role in the development and implementation of positive health policies in society.

Education is a life-long, dynamic, intellectual, and social process of development toward self-actualization. The educator and student collaborate in the pursuit of academic excellence, life long learning goals and professional acumen.

Graduates of The Breen School of Nursing, Ursuline College, practice skills in an evolving, complex, and diverse health care environment. They apply knowledge and leadership skills to facilitate optimal health of populations through promotion, maintenance, and restoration of the health of individuals, families, and communities. The student graduates as a professional, competent, caring, and reflective nurse.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

The Breen School of Nursing offers programs that prepare clinically competent and caring nurses at both the generalist (BSN) and advanced practice (MSN) levels. The school is affiliated with internationally renown healthcare institutions and is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Ursuline College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

CORE CONCEPTS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING The course introduces students to the role of the professional nurse in today's changing health care environment, focusing on concepts of health promotion, maintenance, and restoration. The student is introduced to the concepts of critical thinking, communication, and caring. The research process is also introduced. In addition, the student identifies current nursing issues and begin values clarification. CLINICAL CONCEPTS AND SKILLS FOR THE BEGINNING CAREGIVER This course is designed to assist the student in learning selected therapeutic nursing interventions. Small group laboratory experiences and self-directed learning module assist the student in demonstrating skill competency. Current nursing research is be used as a foundation for therapeutic nursing interventions. HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF THE ADULT This course provides health assessment skills based on a framework for data collection and analysis. It enables the student to utilize clinical judgement skills effectively through the application of the nursing process for health promotion, maintenance, and restoration. CORE CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL CLIENT Core concepts of critical thinking, communication, and caring are utilized in providing care for the adult client with selected health promotion, maintenance, and restoration needs. Special emphasis is placed on the elderly client. The beginning care giver utilizes related therapeutic nursing interventions in institutional and home settings. PHARMACOLOGY IN NURSING This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of the professional nurse in medication administration. Content relevant to nursing theory and practice as it relates to pharmacokinetics and drug classifications is presented. Variations across the life span are addressed. INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING FOR THE LPN A professional nursing course that provides the student an opportunity to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills foundational to the practice of nursing. The course is designed to build on beginning critical thinking, communication, and caring skills. Emphasis is placed on the client with an acute, subacute, and/or chronic illness episode as the student adapts therapeutic nursing interventions to client and family needs. The roles of caregiver, teacher, advocate, and beginning leader are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in acute care, home, and other alternative settings. PROFESSIONAL NURSING: A CONCEPTUAL APPROACH This course is designed for the RN and LPN pursuing a BSN degree. Building on prior knowledge, it has as its major focus the identification and development of the requisite skills needed for the professional nurse to function in today's changing health care environment. Health promotion, maintenance, and restoration activities are addressed through discussion of the core concepts of critical thinking, communication, and caring. EVOLVING CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION OF THE DEVELOPING FAMILY This course focuses on the nursing care of the woman and her family during the maternity cycle and the care of the newborn. Emphasis is placed on the normal physiological and psychological changes of pregnancy. As a beginning critic of research, the student also examines conditions and issues relevant to women's health. The roles of caregiver, teacher, advocate, and beginning leader are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in a variety of settings. Prerequisites: NR 216, 217, 218, 219, 220; concurrent enrollment in junior clinical course(s) as advised; completion of all preceding requirements. EVOLVING CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION IN PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING This course introduces the student to principles of psychiatric mental health nursing. Emphasis is placed on a holistic perspective in the delivery of nursing care to clients with mental health problems. The roles of caregiver, beginning leader, teacher and advocate are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in a variety of settings. EVOLVING CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION OF THE ACUTELY ILL ADULT This course is designed to build on beginning critical thinking, communication, and caring skills. Emphasis is placed on the client with an acute illness episode as the student adapts therapeutic nursing interventions to client and family needs. The roles of caregiver, teacher, advocate, and beginning leader are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in an acute care setting. SOCIETAL IMPACT ON AMERICAN WOMEN'S HEALTH Through a collaborative, historical, and philosophical approach, this course investigates societal issues that have an impact on women's health as well as issues related to women as consumers of health care. In a seminar format, the course evolves through ongoing class input. Content development and assessment methods result from active student participation. Topics may include but are not limited to the following: historical/economic perspectives of women's health, women and the health care system, violence against women, alternative methods of healing, and the physical and mental health of women. TRANSCULTURAL NURSING This is a directed study in transcultural nursing in which students broaden their knowledge of and perspective on nursing and health care systems through reading and experiencing such systems in other cultures/countries. ADVANCED CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION OF THE COMMUNITY This course focuses on community/public health nursing and emphasizes an epidemiological approach to the study and care of aggregates and communities. The roles of advanced caregiver, leader, collaborator, and change agent are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in community settings. ADVANCED CONCEPTS: NURSING LEADERSHIP This course advances the development of leadership principles and group dynamics to enhance the development of the professional nurse. Emphasis is on concepts associated with leadership and the role of the nurse in the practice setting. The Practicum in Leadership course will enable students to apply principles of leadership in practice settings. ADVANCED CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION OF THE CRITICALLY ILL CLIENT This course introduces the student to principles of critical care nursing. As an advanced caregiver the student utilizes therapeutic nursing interventions to meet psychosocial and psychological needs of the critically ill client. The roles of leader, collaborator, and change agent are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in a critical care setting. ADVANCED CONCEPTS: HEALTH PROMOTION, MAINTENANCE, AND RESTORATION OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES This course focuses on the principles of the nursing care of children within their families and the community. It includes concepts and theories relevant to the health promotion, maintenance and restoration needs of children and families. Selected advanced therapeutic nursing interventions are utilized to meet the psychosocial and physiological needs of children and their families. The impact of developmental variables from infancy through adolescence is integrated throughout the course. The roles of advanced caregiver, leader, collaborator and change agent are utilized in applying theory to clinical practice in a variety of settings. PRACTICUM IN LEADERSHIP This course is an intensive practicum emphasizing the transition from the role of the student to the role of the professional nurse. It provides an in-depth experience and opportunity for application of knowledge and skills in the care of clients in selected practice settings with particular emphasis placed on leadership. This course represents the culmination of the nursing program of studies. PRACTICUM IN LEADERSHIP This course is designed for the RN who is completing the program of studies for the BSN degree. Its purpose is to provide the RN with the opportunity to expand her/his experience base within a selected practice setting. The focus of this course is on leadership for the baccalaureate-prepared nurse. This course represents the culmination of the nursing program of studies. This course is open only to the Registered Nurse returning for a BSN degree. NURSING RESEARCH This course guides the student in the research process and its relevance to the advancement of nursing theory and practice. Students advance as participants in the research process and as consumers of nursing research. Prerequisite: Senior level standing in nursing. INDEPENDENT STUDY Directed study or research on a selected topic.
