Washington State University (WSU College of Nursing)

The WSU College of Nursing is proud of its reputation for quality education. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students who graduate from our undergraduate program consistently achieve one of the highest rates of passage of first-time candidates on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses in Washington state. Graduates of undergraduate and graduate programs are highly sought after for their excellence in nursing practice.

Founded in 1968, the WSU College of Nursing is the first and largest public/private nursing education consortium in the United States and provides upper division undergraduate nursing education in partnership with Eastern Washington University and Whitworth University. The college is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Serving over 1000 students annually, the College is a leader in distance learning with students studying in Spokane, Yakima, Walla Walla, Tri-Cities and Vancouver. As the largest volume user of time on the AMS (Academic Media Services) network, students at all College of Nursing sites benefit from instruction and resources not otherwise available at their home sites.

The College offers three options for the registered nurse student: RN to BSN program based at all sites, a web-based RN to BSN program and an accelerated RN to MN option.

The Master of Nursing (MN) program involves several educational avenues to prepare nurses for leadership and advanced practice.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) is offered over two summers, three fall and three spring semesters with courses clustered two to three times per week.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN)

The baccalaureate program is designed to meet the educational needs of basic nursing students. The nursing curriculum builds on prerequisite and general university requirements to provide the professional knowledge, skills and values essential to the practice of nursing. The first two years of the curriculum are completed at Eastern Washington University, Whitworth University, Washington State University or any institution offering equivalent courses. The last two years are provided at the WSU College of Nursing in Spokane, Tri-Cities and Yakima.

REGISTERED NURSE TO BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

Registered Nurses interested in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (RN to BSN) study at select sites throughout the state.

The AMS interactive television coverage is offered in Spokane, Tri-Cities, Walla Walla, Yakima and Vancouver.

The web-based program is taught 24/7 through the College of Nursing website. Web RNs complete clinical courses with BSN mentors at sites close to home; College of Nursing faculty teach the courses.

REGISTERED NURSE TO MASTER OF NURSING

The Accelerated RN to MN Program is for RNs completing their first bachelor’s degree in the RN to BSN Program. RNs apply to the MN program to take up to 6 MN credits to replace 6 RNB credits during the RN to BSN program. Upon completion of the BSN, files are again reviewed for admission to the MN program.

MASTER OF NURSING (MN)

The Master of Nursing degree program offers specialization in these areas: Community-Based/Population Focused Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (P/MHNP). The MN degree program prepares advanced practice nurses with leadership skills to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate health care, as well as formulate policy for a diverse and multicultural society.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN NURSING (PH.D.)

The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program at Washington State University admitted its first students in Summer 2007. The program responds directly to the vision of the College of Nursing to pursue opportunities to expand the frontiers of nursing knowledge, science, and practice by using innovative approaches and leveraged resources to benefit all people. The College bridges barriers to health care in the global community with a focus on underserved and rural populations. In addition the program allies itself with the College mission to inspire and transform health care for generations to come. It endorses the values of inquiry and knowledge application, leadership, character, stewardship, and diversity.
