Welcome to the School of Nursing at Western Kentucky University. Our mission is to provide undergraduate and graduate education, and lifelong learning opportunities to meet the changing health care needs of a global society.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is the entry level for professional nursing practice. The Post-RN option is for registered nurses wanting to obtain their BSN Degree. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree is the foundation for advanced nursing practice and builds upon the baccalaureate degree.

All programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

We maintain full approval by the Kentucky Board of Nursing as well as membership in the National League for Nursing (NLN).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN NURSING

The goal of professional nursing practice is to assist clients to achieve an optimal level of health or to die with dignity. Professional nursing practice encompasses the application of nursing process, critical thinking skills, communication and scientific inquiry in the delivery of nursing care in any setting, including commu-nity and acute care settings. Nurses assume multiple roles including caregiver, teacher, coordinator, com-municator, collaborator, and advocate. Nurses use interventions aimed at health promotion, risk reduction, disease surveillance/prevention/management for clients of all ages and diverse cultures. Professional nurses are accountable for their practice within the guidelines of standards of care and ethical codes set forth by the professional organization.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING DEGREE

The BSN is the entry level to professional nursing practice. The faculty is committed to preparing the BSN students at the pre-licensure level to successfully enter professional nursing practice.

INTRO RESEARCH METHOD

CONCEPTS OF DISEASE PROCESSES
Explores the pathophysiological processes influencing the health of clients across the lifespan and the role of the nurse in assessing manifestations of these processes.

HLTH ASSESSMENT ACR LIFE SPAN
Development of physical assessment skills to determine health status of clients across the life span.

FUNDAMENTALS PROF NURSING
Fundamental concepts, principles, psychomotor skills and techniques that form the basis for professional nursing practice.

CONCEPT PHARMACOLOGY
Explores principles of pharmacology, drug prototypes used to treat alternations in body systems and the nurse's role in administering drugs to clients across the lifespan.

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Application and integration of mental health concepts to provide holistic care to clients experiencing alterations in mental health.

IND DIRECTED STUDY/NURSING
A variable-credit course which permits the student to select and explore a topic of interest in nursing. With faculty guidance, the student is expected to design, implement and evaluate objectives based on identified learning needs.

ONCOLOGY NURSING
Explores the bio/psycho/social/cultural/ethical concepts related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Emphasis is on the nursing care of the patient with cancer and the family. Lecture, 3 hours.

NURS PERSP WMN THRU LIFE SPAN
Through lecture and class discussion, health issues confronting women throughout the life cycle will be explored. Lecture, three hours.

TRANSCULTURAL NURSING
Focus on developing knowledge of theoretically based transcultural nursing with application of nursing care to clients across the lifespan.

CONCEPTS OF PROF NURSING
Emphasizes concepts that enhance development of advanced professional practice and continued professional development.

HEALTH PROMO ACROSS LIFESPAN
Introduces professional nursing standards and selected nursing interventions to promote the health of individuals and families from diverse cultures across the lifespan.

HEALTH ALTER 1 ACROSS LIFESPAN
Utilization of professional nursing standards to implement holistic nursing care to individuals and families from diverse cultures across the lifespan experiencing alterations in health.

MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING
Application of basic medical-surgical nursing concepts to provide holistic care to diverse individuals and families experiencing alterations in health. (per proposal)

TEACH HEALTH PROMOT NURS PRAC
Emphasizes client educational assessment, special learning needs, theories, models, and nurses' role of teaching and health promotion for clients across the life span.

COOPERATIVE ED/NURSING
Practical experience in a supervised work situation with a cooperating hospital, governmental or other health care agency, emphasizing application of knowledge and skills in selected areas of nursing.

NURS LDRSHIP/MGT
Theoretical foundations of nursing management and leadership emphasizing human resource management, decision making, and motivational skills.

NURS INFORMATICS
Explores the science and art of nursing informatics in the health care system in the context of nursing practice, education, systems administration and research.

PROFESSIONAL ISSUES
Explores issues and trends in current professional practice: social, legal, economic, historical, theoretical, political, ethical and research components.

NURSING PRACTICUM
Integrates previous knowledge and skills in the delivery of nursing care to multiple clients in a variety of health care settings.

SCHOOL HEALTH NURSING
Provides theory and skills to assist the registered nurse in fulfilling the multiple roles of the school nursing in K-12 settings. Developed in collaboration with the Educational Professional Standards Board of the Kentucky Department of Education. Clinical practicum may be completed at school of employment.

NURSING RESEARCH
A study of the research process with emphasis on critical analysis and evaluation of selected research findings for application to professional nursing practice.

WOMEN, INFANTS, CHILDREN
Application and integration of nursing concepts to provide holistic care to diverse women, infants, and children experiencing alterations in health.

COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CARE
Selected holistic modes of healing will be explored. Focus will be on history, research findings, theoretical basis and legal implications. Lecture, three hours.

HIGH ACUITY NURSING
Application and integration of advanced medical-surging nursing concepts to provide holistic nursing care to the high acuity patient.

SENIOR PRACTICUM
Application and integration of previous knowledge and skills in the delivery of nursing care to multiple clients in a variety of health care settings to provide holistic care to clients experiencing alterations in mental health.

CARDIAC MONITORING
Interpretation of basic cardiac dysrhthmias and hemodynamic waveforms, application of principles and techniques and recommended interventions.

HLTH ALTER II ACROSS LIFESPAN
Utilization of professional nursing standards and selected nursing interventions to promote the health of individuals, families, and groups from diverse cultures across the lifespan.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING
Theories and concepts from nursing and public health address the multidimensional health needs of diverse populations; role of the nurse in healthcare of society.

MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING II
Application and integration of advanced medical-surgical nursing concepts to provide holistic care to diverse individuals, families and groups experiencing complex alterations in health.

CONCEPTS PUB HEALTH NURSING
Theories and concepts from public health nursing address the multidimensional health needs of diverse populations and role of the nurse in community-based settings.

APPLICATIONS PH NURSING
Application of nursing process with diverse populations across the lifespan in community-based settings. Focus on health promotion.

RURAL HLTH and SFTY
Students will explore a variety of health and safety issues unique to rural populations. The interdisciplinary team concept will be used throughout the course to foster collaboration that facilitates sharing of the expertise of students and faculty.

GERONTOLOGICAL NURSING
This course focuses on the nursing care of older adults. Emphasis is placed on theories of aging, pathophysiological processes and normal variations specific to the aging population, and use of the nursing process to enhance positive outcomes.

PARISH NURSING
An exploration of the dimensions of parish nurse practice, its key concepts, and how it is practiced using the nursing process. Registered nurses who successfully complete this core curriculum can be recognized as parish nurses by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. Baccalaureate nursing students who successfully complete the course may be recognized as parish nurses upon completion of the baccalaureate nursing program and licensure as a registered nurse.

PARISH NURSING
An exploration of the dimensions of parish nurse practice, its key concepts, and how it is practiced using the nursing process. Registered nurses who successfully complete the core curriculum can be recognized as parish nurses by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. Baccalaureate nursing students who successfully complete the course may be recognized as parish nurses upon completion of the baccalaureate nursing program and licensure as registered nurses.
