Wichita State University (School of Nursing)




The WSU School of Nursing is located in the largest urban area in the state of Kansas and consequently the health care community is the largest and most comprehensive in the region as well as the second-largest employment sector in Wichita. The School of Nursing is the second largest nursing program in the state with approximately 400 baccalaureate and masters students.

The City of Wichita, with a population of over 300,000, provides students with cultural and recreational opportunities. Many students take advantage of the availability of part-time jobs to help finance their education. The resources of a large urban area provide greater opportunities for students in the health professions. While the University has always served the urban population, the mission statement for the Institution reinforces the need for strong ties to the community.

The School of Nursing has contracts with approximately 100 clinical agencies in Wichita and the surrounding communities. Wichita is a major health care referral center and clinical facilities for essentially all clinical specializations are available and are used by both undergraduate and graduate nursing students.

The Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) fully accredits the undergraduate and graduate programs in the School of Nursing. WSU is distinguished from the other Regents institutions by an urban mission. Using all of the educational, economic, cultural and entertainment advantages associated with the metropolitan area in which it is located, WSU offers its students a special kind of education that equips graduates with the intellectual, technical and professional skills to meet a modern changing world.

MISSION

The mission of the School of Nursing is to prepare students from diverse populations to provide professional nursing across the continuum of health care, and is consistent with the mission of the College of Health Professions. Faculty in the School of Nursing promote innovation and excellence in nursing education through practice, scholarship, teaching and service at both the baccalaureate and graduate level. PHILOSOPHY

In support of the mission of the School of Nursing, the faculty believes that the health of society can be influenced through teaching, practice, service and scholarship. The core values within the program are excellence, professionalism, student-centered, use of innovation, and respect for others. The faculty provides programs and courses that offer maximum flexibility and assistance for students with differing backgrounds and educational goals.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The Undergraduate Program prepares students for beginning practice in nursing in any setting where there are clients in need of care. The beginning practice nurse values scientific inquiry as a basis for professional practice; believes in life-long learning as a necessity in the practice setting; uses critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques necessary to make sound nursing judgments; is responsible and accountable to assist clients to identify and participate in meeting diverse and rapidly changing health needs; and functions with other disciplines to promote the health of individuals, families and groups.

The RN to BSN Completion Program offers advanced placement to registered nurses seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The curriculum is designed so that the RN who has received an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an NLN accredited program and who meets the work experience criteria may achieve advanced standing in the basic nursing program through retroactive credit. Retroactive credit (25 hours) will be awarded during the final semester of coursework upon written notification to the Director of the Undergraduate Program. RN-Diploma students may achieve the twenty-five nursing credits through credit by examination (CrE) and portfolio review where applicable.

The RN to MSN Program allows the exceptional Registered Nurse to achieve the baccalaureate and master's degrees in an accelerated time frame, with 10 hours of baccalaureate course work replaced by 9 hours of graduate course work. This plan is designed for RN students who hold career goals which extend beyond the bachelor's degree and whose professional expertise and capabilities strongly indicate a potential for advanced study.

The Graduate Program prepares students for advanced practice roles in nursing. Graduate education provides discovery, description, development and dissemination of knowledge which contributes to the evolving science of nursing. The skilled advanced practice nurse values scientific inquiry as a basis for professional practice, analyzes factors influencing health, implements and evaluates strategies for improving health, provides leadership, and strives to contribute to the discipline of nursing.

INTRODUCTION TO NURSING PRACTICE
Provides an introduction to the discipline and scope of nursing as practiced in diverse settings. Dimensions of current and emerging nursing roles as they relate to legal, ethical, professional, and issues in the current and future health care system will be examined. Interaction skills related to individual and group communication will be emphasized.

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
Focuses on teaching health promotion concepts and providing preventive care to the individual, family, and community. Introduces the nursing process as a problem-solving tool. Uses the technology lab and various primary care settings for clinical learning.

HEALTH ALTERATIONS I
Emphasizes alterations in the health status of adults. Studies major preventable and acute conditions with interventions directed toward health promotion.

RESEARCH IN NURSING
Presents an overview of the research process and its relationship with theory. Emphasizes identifying clinical problems, critiquing research findings, and applying those findings to practice.

RN BRIDGE COURSE
A Web-based course. Enhances the knowledge base of the RNBSN student in leadership and management theory and application, issues in professional nursing, therapeutic communication, and nursing theory.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Emphasizes multiple methods of data collection relevant to the health status of individuals and families across the lifespan. Focuses on holistic assessment of individuals and families from diverse populations.

WORKSHOPS IN NURSING
Intensive study of special topics related to nursing practice, education, or research.

SECONDARY CARE
Clinical course emphasizes care for patients with acute illness and/or acute complications of chronic illness in secondary care settings. Focuses on the application of therapeutic interventions to maximize health potential in individuals from the young adult to the frail elderly.

HEALTH ALTERATIONS II
Emphasizes health alterations and chronic conditions of adults. Studies interventions which enhance the quality of life for adults with illness and chronic health alterations.

MATERNAL-NEWBORN NURSING
Studies maternal-newborn nursing with clinical applications in various health care settings. Focuses on family-centered nursing care from preconception through the post-partum period.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN NURSING
Explores leading and managing as essential components of professional nursing practice. Examines the implication of ethical, legal, and economic issues as they impact nursing practice.

SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
Focuses on specific skills and issues related to professionals surviving and thriving in today's health care climate. Examines and identifies sources of stress, conflict, and professional dissatisfaction. Addresses conflict resolution; personal health promotion; how to cope with organizational change; ways to adapt to economic, ethical, and political issues; assertive communication; stressreducing strategies; and ways to find professional satisfaction in less than satisfactory circumstances. Emphasizes adopting and promoting lifestyles conducive to optimal health. Health care background recommended.

TERTIARY CARE
Clinical course emphasizes patient care management of young adult to frail elderly individuals with complex health problems. Focuses on therapeutic interventions used to attain, maintain, or regain health within clients' existing capabilities in a tertiary care setting.

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Studies mental health nursing with clinical applications in community and hospital settings. Focuses on nursing care of clients across the lifespan who have mental illness.

SPECIAL PROJECTS IN NURSING
Elective. Individual study of selected topics, didactic and/or clinical designed to enhance the student's knowledge base and competencies in nursing practice.

NURSING OF CHILDREN
Focuses on family-centered nursing of children from infancy through adolescence with clinical application in community and hospital settings.

PERIOPERATIVE CLINICAL MANAGEMENT: WORK-STUDY
Lecture/clinical course; examines the nursing needs of individuals in small groups that have various health problems requiring surgery. Focuses on the expansion of the nursing student's power to perform deliberate actions for the benefit and well-being of others in all phases of the surgical process (before, during, and after). Emphasizes the nursing student's acquisition of clinical management skills in all phases of the surgical process.

CARE MANAGER: CARE OF POPULATIONS
Explores the role of the professional nurse in a population-based setting. Major component is completion of an intervention plan based on a community assessment. Integral components are public health nursing core functions and care coordination principles for clients along the continuum of care. Examines issues related to professional nursing.

PRIMARY PREVENTION
A Web-based course. For RN students. Focuses on health promotion concepts to enhance wellness of individuals, families, and communities. Emphasizes public health concepts.

CARE MANAGER-RN
Explores the role of the professional nurse in the community setting. Students select an area of focus for community nursing enhancement and complete a community assessment project. Includes topics related to management and financial implications for nursing.

CRITICAL CARE
Emphasizes the provision of care for critically ill clients across the lifespan. Focuses on complex nursing interventions and clinical decision making.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION FIELD STUDY
A field placement which integrates coursework with a planned and supervised professional experience designed to complement and enhance the student's academic program. Individualized programs must be formulated in consultation with, and approved by, appropriate faculty sponsors and cooperative education coordinators. Students may follow one of two scheduling patterns: parallel, enrolling concurrently in a minimum of 6 hours of coursework in addition to their co-op assignments, or alternating, working full-time one semester in a field study and returning to full school enrollment the following semester; such students need not be concurrently enrolled in any other course. Prerequisites: successful completion of the freshman year and satisfactory academic standing prior to the first job assignment.

CLINICAL CAPSTONE-RN
Enhances the registered nurse's skills in the community and other settings. Provides opportunity to perform therapeutic nursing interventions in student-selected settings.

CLINICAL CAPSTONE
An intensive clinical experience practicing full-time with a preceptor in a primary, secondary, or tertiary care setting to enhance socialization into the professional nursing role. Student focuses on a selected area of practice within the current health care environment.
