Yakima Valley Community College (Nursing Program)

The nursing profession is part of a centuries-old tradition of providing quality care for patients. Though the fundamental principles remain the same today, technology and a rapidly changing demographic require nursing professionals to broaden their skills and experience and apply them in a number of varied settings.

The YVCC Nursing Program offers an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) that is six quarters in length.

The Yakima Valley Community College Nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and is approved by the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission. Upon successful completion of the fourth quarter of the ADN program, a student will be eligible to take the Practical Nursing Examination offered by the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission. Upon successful completion of the sixth quarter, a student will be eligible to take the Registered Nurse Examination offered by the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission.

Yakima Valley Community College Nursing Program is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. This accreditation is valid through March 2013.

NURSING PROGRAM MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY

The mission and philosophy of the Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC) nursing program are authored by the YVCC nursing faculty and are congruent with the basic commitments of the college. Yakima Valley Community College is a student-centered institution, dedicated to providing a consistent and balanced educational delivery system, including vocational programs, to the citizens of District 14 of central Washington State. Along with traditional education, these programs place an emphasis on reaching a diverse population of learners, including ethnic and cultural groups, in a variety of locations. Emphasis is also placed on developing knowledge and skills that enhance a student’s quality of life and promote life long learning.

The mission of the nursing program is to provide quality-nursing education that reflects the college’s commitment to teaching and service to the community. The philosophy addresses four major concepts that provide the foundation for nursing practice. These include: person, environment, health, and nursing. In addition, the philosophy includes two concepts that reflect faculty beliefs about how learning occurs in a formal nursing education setting. These concepts are learning and nursing education.

NURSING

We believe nursing is an applied science that includes both a theory base and the practical application of knowledge. The focus of nursing is caring for people. In providing care, nurses utilize knowledge from the biological, behavioral, and physical sciences. The caring orientation is the heritage of nursing and is expressed through compassionate, dignified, and quality treatment of individuals or groups. Nursing promotes and maintains health, prevents disease and disability, cares for and rehabilitates the sick, and supports the dying. Nurses use cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills within the parameters of the nursing process to assist patients, clients or groups to attain, maintain, or restore a state of maximum wellness. Nursing provides teaching, direct service, and client advocacy through the use of the nursing process. Nursing involves the skillful application of communication, health teaching, and leadership behaviors as well as critical thinking applied through the nursing process. In addition to practicing independently, much of nursing involves collaboration with other health care providers.

NURSING EDUCATION

Nursing education provides the foundation for various roles within the nursing profession (Nursing Assistant, Practical Nurse, and Registered Nurse). Nursing education involves the student, instructor, and learning environment in a dynamic and interactive process. Programs of nursing education can be designed to facilitate concurrent preparation for Practical and Registered (associate degree) nursing. Professional roles within nursing practice are differentiated primarily in terms of knowledge acquisition, legal scope of practice, and degree of independence with which the graduate implements the nursing process. A central emphasis in nursing education is to prepare graduates to become lifelong learners.

Nursing education is responsive to the changing health needs of individuals, groups and communities. Faculty function as educators, facilitators, resource persons, and role models to promote an environment that provides students with opportunities to experience interactive, theoretical, and hands-on learning. Successful teaching strategies accommodate students’ learning styles, create interest that enhances students’ critical thinking abilities, and reinforce knowledge needed for competent nursing practice. Effective associate degree nursing education assists students in successfully meeting their educational goals and prepares them for entry-level, competent nursing practice in a variety of settings. Faculty responsibilities include structuring the learning environment so that it promotes mutual respect, acceptance, and support. In addition, evaluation of learning outcomes is a faculty responsibility. Multiple methods of evaluation are used in nursing education to measure student success. Program outcomes are also evaluated. These evaluation data provide the basis for ongoing program evaluation and planning.
